Sarah Watts – Jewellery

I am a self-taught designer-maker creating richly detailed and decorative jewellery using my own handmade glass beads and sterling silver. I endeavour to make jewellery that is unique and appeals to those seeking something different to that found on the high street.

I use the ancient ‘Lampwork’ technique, thought to have it’s origins in the 5thCentury BC, to make my beads. Each bead is individually crafted by hand from molten glass in a hot flame. I create the surface decorations using layer upon layer of more molten glass, each one carefully applied by hand and melted in before applying the next. In this manner I am able to create great depth, patterning and richness to my beads.

I then employ traditional silversmithing techniques to create the finished jewellery. I use sterling silver in all my pieces and all components are handmade by me.

My work is influenced by my love of colour, decoration and texture. My inspirations range from illustrated Medieval manuscripts and Ottoman Empire ceramics to 1950s and ‘70s fabric designs – with many others between. I work in my home studio in the Welsh Heritage town of Blaenavon.
