Sarah Leigh – Felti

Sarah Leigh – Felti

Through the medium of felt making, I design and produce sculptural vessels and tactile lighting in many forms. These might be Nuno felted strings of conical lights, marrying beautiful Liberty print silk chiffon with cobweb fringed Icelandic wool, or statement lampshades that play with light and shade through the combination of different fibres, Shibori techniques or the use of many resists to create undulating layers of texture.

My practice always reflects my love of nature and its endless source of textures and forms. It’s rare to return from a walk without pockets stuffed with seedpods, shells or pieces of bark. These inspirational finds are referenced in my sculptural vessels and lighting ranges. No two pieces are identical, reflecting the nuances of the felt making process, and the unique properties of the wool fibres used and their relationship with light. Throughout the design process it is this relationship that becomes the key inspiration – to produce finished pieces that both invite touch and an appreciation of the warmth of illuminated felt.
